Previously, I was given a chance to drive an E-class & S-class, specifically E300 Bluetec & S400h. Thanks to a buddy for borrowing it.
For a first timer in this , I felt like a noob, to feel the advanced assistance technologies, the auto braking, lane keep assist and so on. You may call it technophobia. But given a day to familiarize in the saloon, I could have overcame the “phobia”.
If you’re someone looking for comfort and intend to float in your ride while speeding, a Merc will be a good choice. Throughout the drive, flooring the gas pedal seems effortless and its power-train was showing no fatigue , well of course it wont. Its large mass and the acceleration made it felt that way. To me it felt a lil like speeding in a ferry/yacht.
IT has to be noted, technology could be reliable, but if it’s dealing with one’s life, do not take a chance. Remember professional drivers crash too.
Lets talk about the part where i sat at passenger seat and the owner drove like a mad man. As storied before, I met an accident 3 years ago which induced a trauma within. So whenever someone’s speeding , not me on the wheels, I grasp my “life” , like literally in my hands, in this case, the access grip handle. HAHAHA. He demonstrated how the cars will warn you on the vehicles at front and how it will sudden-brake if the warning was ignored completely. That moment, I sort of overcame my technophobia.
In a nutshell, I admired the body work and the engineering marvel done to these cars. Rigid chassis felt right away. Ultimate brakes and autonomous features are top notch. Engine performance and hybrid capability was impressive. After all, these developments involved billions of dollars into it.
So, if you’re buying these cars, remember that you’re paying for the efforts done by engineers and researchers onto it. Most importantly, if you’re an owner, do not forget to keep the fuel tank filled, as you do not want to be seen pushing it to the side of the highway, waiting for fuel.
Do appreciate , carmakers are turning into compact engine size and pack it with most ponies possible, for example AMG with the famous 2 litre and 420hp engine. Many decades ago, large engines with 8,10 cylinders to it barely touches 300hp and are highly non-economical. These days, you get a better economy and the fun part of it was not compromised.
